A BellSouth Back-up Line is a special type of addition line to handle overflow calls from the primary business line, designed for customers who experience fluctuations in call volume and are not sure if they are getting all of their calls. Back-up Line is half the monthly rate of a business line with a per-minute usage charge. Customers receive a monthly calling activity summary that details calls handled by the Back-up Line. Back-up Line must be collocated with the primary business line.

The per-minute usage charge allows you to monitor and determine the volume of traffic you are receiving on your overflow line or lines. You can determine when it is cost-effective to add a line based on the per-minute usage charges. Back-Up Lines are often used for fax service as it is very difficult to determine the number of missed or displayed faxes incurred by busy conditions. Back-up Lines are also frequently used as part of a business continuity plan.
